Moped season is once again upon us. Here are a few tips and guidelines as to the safe operation of mopeds. Please drive safely and have a great summer.

What is a moped? A two or three wheeled vehicle which has: * an engine rating of not more than two horsepower * a cylinder capacity not exceeding fifty cubic centimeters; * an automatic transmission; and * a maximum designed speed of not more than 25 miles per hour on a flat surface (IC 9-13-2-109).
Note: Any motorized vehicle exceeding these limits is considered a motorcycle and is subject to Indiana licensing and registration laws.
What is legal age for operating a moped? Fifteen years of age provided the person possesses a BMV issued I.D. and wears a helmet and eye protection (IC 9-21-11-12), (IC 9-21-11-13).
Motorized bicycles; prohibitions on operation; conditions
Indiana Code 9-21-11-12
A motorized bicycle may not be operated under any of
the following conditions:
(1) By a person less than fifteen (15) years of age. (2) By a person who has not obtained an identification card under IC 9-24, a permit under IC 9-24, an operator''s license under IC 9-24, a chauffeur''s license under IC 9-24, or a public passenger chauffeur''s license under IC 9-24. (3) On an interstate highway or a sidewalk. (4) At a speed greater than twenty-five (25) miles per hour. As added by P.L.2-1991, SEC.9.
