MUNCIE, Ind. -- It is the mission of the Muncie Police Department to provide the citizens of Muncie with the most professional and efficient police services possible. During 2008 the Muncie Police Department has operated with an average of 13% or fifteen (15) officers fewer than the FOP contract required. With the anticipated shortfall in tax revenue over the next two years this number will likely be reduced even further.
In 2008 Muncie Police Officers responded to 72166 calls. Several of these calls are not related to police duties. Many calls are for crimes that there are no suspects or witnesses to and the victim is requesting a report for their insurance company. In an effort to dedicate man hours to the most serious calls the Muncie Police Department will be implementing changes in the procedure for handling calls that are not criminal or less serious nature.
Citizens who report certain incidents will be directed to call the number for the Desk Officer or complete a report on the Web Site for the Muncie Police Department. Citizens can also come to City Hall in person and speak with the Desk Officer from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. seven days a week.
Examples of the type of offenses effected are, Vandalism, Lost License Plates, Lost Cell Phones, Lost Wallets, Requests to Speak to an Officer, and Civil Problems over which Police have no authority.
Police will continue to respond as rapidly as possible to all reports of crimes in progress, crimes involving injury, or crimes that pose a threat to the citizens of Muncie. The changes will result in a reduction of approximately 12% in the number of calls that police will actually respond to the scene of.
